Summer hobbies spotlight: Ashley Lapointe finds connection through native plants

When she's not supporting clients at Ehrlo Counselling Services, Ashley Lapointe spends much of her free time helping native plants thrive.

A native plant enthusiast for several years, Ashley is working to landscape her yard exclusively with native wildflowers, sedges, and grasses that support Saskatchewan's pollinators and local ecosystems. This year, she also began volunteering with Nature Regina, connecting with community members who are leading environmental and neighbourhood revitalization projects across the city.

Recently, Ashley volunteered at the annual spring seedling sale at the mâmawêyatitân centre. The event brought together organizations including Nature Regina, Growing Young Movers, North Central Strong, Regina Public Library, North Central Community Association, the Southern Saskatchewan Butterflyway Project, and the Seed Sitters Club.

The sale provides an opportunity for gardeners to purchase native seedlings that can be difficult to find at traditional garden centres while also connecting with others who share an interest in native plants.

"I loved getting to share my experiences with folks who are just dipping their toes into growing native plants," Ashley said. "I learn so much from more experienced gardeners every time I'm at an event."

For Ashley, the hobby offers benefits beyond gardening.

"As a counsellor, I'm mindful of spending free time in ways that support my own self-care and invest in community care," she said. "Native planting projects offer the best of both worlds."

Among her favourite beginner-friendly native plants are smooth blue aster, giant hyssop, and Canada goldenrod (seen above). In the summer months, these plants attract a variety of bumblebees and butterflies.

Ashley hopes more people realize that supporting native plants doesn't require a major landscaping project.

"Folks don't need to get rid of their lawns or non-native flowers to make a difference," she said. "Even reserving a square metre for native plants in your yard or garden can make a huge difference for the insects who depend on them."
