Foster family celebrates one year of growing together

A family in the Treatment Foster Care program is celebrating one year since foster daughter Grace* became part of their lives.

To mark the occasion, foster parents Barb and Kendall  Shram hosted a tea party with family and friends, creating an opportunity to celebrate Grace and reflect on everything the past year has brought. Grace was apart of the party planning – helping invite those special to her journey, baking a homemade chocolate cake, decorating the home, and picking out her very best dress.

“We know that kids like Grace, who have lived in several homes, might not always feel celebrated...and so we knew that we wanted to do something special for her,” said Barb.

Treatment Foster Care provides specialized, family-based care for children with complex needs. The program is a partnership between Ranch Ehrlo and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services, matching children with qualified foster parents who provide a safe, supportive home environment. Foster families receive professional training, 24/7 support, respite and in-home services, and access to Ranch Ehrlo’s assessment and therapeutic services.

At the party, Barb read a card she had written for Grace, reflecting on the experiences they had shared over the past year and the growth she and her husband had witnessed. A photo book was also presented to Grace, giving her a keepsake filled with memories of her first year with the family.

“Barb and Kendall have done some amazing work with Grace over the past year and have formed a wonderful attachment with her,” shared Dianna Stang, program manager.

For Grace, the past year has been one of significant growth. She has not only found a home with Barb and Kendall but has also made remarkable strides as she has settled into her new life and continued building relationships, confidence, and new skills.

The tea party was a chance for everyone who has been part of Grace’s journey to come together and celebrate just how far she has come.

“It was a very heartwarming experience to be part of,” said Dianna.  “I thank Barb and Kendall for welcoming Grace into their home and into their hearts, and for going over and above of what we expect of our foster parents.”

For Barb and Kendall, the celebration was an opportunity to pause and recognize a year filled with both challenges and successes, and to celebrate the incredible achievements she has accomplished over the past year.

“We’re grateful to have the opportunity to change the trajectory of a life,” said Barb. “Our kindness can make a difference.”
