Ehrlo Early Learning Centre (EELC) staff are slaying cultural education, immersing children in diverse celebration using craft and play.

Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) is the highlight of this month’s cultural showcase at Ruth Pawson, and kids are feeling festive with their new classroom dragon joining the fun.

“The idea came from when I was taking the Early Childhood Education Level 3 program. We made a dragon for one of our classes, so since then I’ve tried to teach children that I work with about the Chinese New Year,” explained Jenna Ripplinger, staff at Ruth Pawson. “I’ve always believed in teaching children about other cultures.”

Chinese New Year 2024 marks the Year of the Dragon, and so staff felt it fitting that kids learn about the celebration and honor the dragon with their own classroom creative.

The paper dragon hasn’t only been used as a tool to build interest and understanding but has become a transitional activity to move the children from group play to hand hygiene.

“It’s been a fun activity that the children enjoy,” said Ripplinger.
